A thorough introduction to Human Computer Interaction covering practical and theoretical approaches.

Nielsen, J. Usability Engineering, SunSoft, 1993. ISBN 0-12-518405-0.
This book is an excellent guide to the methods of usability engineering. By emphasising cost-effective methods, the book provides the tools needed to avoid usability surprises and improve product quality.

Sanno, Darrell, Designing Large Scale Web Sites, Wiley Computer Publishing, 1996. ISBN 0-471-14276
An practical approach to designing large scale web sites. Don’t be put off by the age, this is an excellent book.

Fleming, Jennifer, Web Navigation: Designing the User Experience, O’Reilly & Associates, 1998. ISBN 1-56592-351-0
A good introduction to web site design, illustrated with useful real-world examples.

Howlett, Virginia, Visual Interface Design for Windows, Wiley Computer Publishing, 1996. ISBN 0-471-13419-8.
Howlett managed the visual design of Windows 95 and NT. This book gives a good introduction to visual design, and how it can be applied to improve usability.

Norman, D.A. Psychology of Everyday Things, Basic Books Inc., New York, 1988. ISBN 0-465-06709-3.
This is an excellent introductory book on the design of systems and their user interface. It describes some of the psychology behind the problems people have and gives plenty of examples.

Tognazzini, B. Tog on Interface, Addison-Wesley, 1992.
ISBN 0-201-60842-1.
This book is written by one of the most influential Apple designers and includes extracts from his question and answer column in the "Apple Direct" magazine.


Style Guides top
Microsoft The Windows Interface Guidelines for Software Design, Microsoft Press, 1995. ISBN 1-55615-679-0.
This provides guidelines for developing user interfaces that run in Microsoft Windows. It describes the components of the Windows user interface and explains design principles for software developers and designers of Windows-based applications. It is also distributed as a help file with the Microsoft Developers Network.

Apple Macintosh Human Interface Guidelines, Addison- Wesley, Cupertino, California, 1992. ISBN 0-201-62216-5.
This book has grown from a chapter in "Inside Macintosh" and describes the principles and guidelines for implementing user interfaces on the Apple Macintosh.

Apple Guide to Macintosh Software Localization, Addison- Wesley, Cupertino, California, 1992. ISBN 0-201-60856-1.
This book is a particularly valuable source of information on non-latin scripts. It includes descriptions of 27 distinct writing systems.

Apple Making it Macintosh, 1993.

IBM Object-oriented Interface Design IBM Common User Access Guidelines, (OOID CUA), 1992. ISBN 1-56529-170-0.
This edition replaces and makes obsolete the previous editions, "Systems Application Architecture CUA Guide to User Interface Design" and "Systems Application Architecture CUA Advanced Interface Design Reference". It is available from IBM Technical Publications Centres.
